Your card on file

Effective 27 September 2026

When you pay in the SplitClub app, we ask Stripe to keep your card so we can charge the deposits you have already agreed to without sending you back to a payment sheet. This page says exactly what that means — what is stored, what can be charged when you are not holding your phone, and how to change or remove the card.

1. What is stored, and where

Your card is stored by Stripe, our payment processor, against a Stripe customer record that belongs to you. SplitClub never receives or stores your full card number, and we cannot read it. What we can see, and what the app shows you, is the brand and the last four digits — Visa •••• 4242.

A card is saved the first time you complete a payment in the app. We do not save a card you have not used to pay with, and opening your profile does not create anything at Stripe on its own.

2. What your saved card can be charged for

One saved card at a time is your default. That is the card used for the two charges below, both of which happen after the moment you agreed to them, with no second payment sheet:

Guest deposits. When you add a guest to a night, you agree to a deposit for that guest at that moment. The deposit is taken later, as a real charge rather than a temporary authorization — a card authorization expires in about a week, and nights are often announced months ahead. When your guest checks in, the deposit is credited to your SplitClub wallet, which you can spend or withdraw. If your guest does not turn up, the club keeps it.

Request to Join deposit holds. When you ask to join a hosted day, the deposit is authorized — held, not taken — on your card. If the host accepts, the hold is captured. If the host declines, or the request expires, the hold is released.

Nothing else is charged to your saved card without you being in the app. Places on club days are paid for when you confirm them, on the payment sheet, with whatever card you choose there.

3. When a charge needs you

Some cards ask the bank to confirm a payment. If that happens on a deposit, we do not take the money and we do not mark the deposit as held — it stays pending, with the reason recorded, and we come back to you. A deposit is never recorded as paid on the strength of a charge that did not complete.

4. Changing or removing the card

In the app: Profile → Payment methods. From there you can add a card, choose which one is the default, and remove one entirely.

Removing every card does not cancel a deposit you have already agreed to. It means we have no way to collect it, and we will contact you instead.

5. Refunds and disputes

A guest deposit credited to your wallet on check-in is yours to withdraw. If you believe a charge is wrong, write to us before disputing it with your bank — a dispute freezes the amount for both of us and takes considerably longer to resolve than an email.

6. Where this sits

This page describes how the card-on-file part of SplitClub works. It sits alongside, and does not replace, our Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's own terms.
